The following is a blog post from Kimberly Wright, author of Believing Out Loud, which invites us on an adventure with God. As always, review copies are available to book bloggers.
In promoting my book, I have had the honor of being interviewed by several radio talk show hosts. And though their questions vary each time, one question has been a constant. “What are some miraculous adventures God has taken you on?”
I think they expect my answer to be something along the lines of a mission trip where I saw the wounded instantly healed, or an event equally awe-inspiring. While I would love for that to be an adventure God leads me on, it is not part of my story to this point. I feel a little bad for the host when I give him a couple of examples, as I can sense a mild disappointment on his end.
But as the question has continued to arise, and the responses all similar, it has had me thinking what each one of us would consider an adventure. I shared in my book that while some may see adventure as sky diving or rock climbing, I define it as doing something without any idea how it will end up. For those of us who have ever battled fear or low self-worth, we are not eager to embark on a journey where we don’t have a sense of certainty the outcome will be positive.
As I look back over the journey God has lead me on, I can say with confidence that each adventure was a stepping stone to the next one. However, I can also see that what has been an adventure for me may not constitute an adventure to another person. I have come to decide that is the beauty of it.
Scripture tells us we are created for a purpose that God prepared in advance for us. I love the Amplified Version of Ephesians 2:10. It says, “For we are God’s [own] handiwork (His workmanship), recreated in Christ Jesus, [born anew] that we may do those good works which God predestined (planned beforehand) for us [taking paths which He prepared ahead of time], that we should walk in them [living the good life which He prearranged and made ready for us to live].”
My adventures have always occurred when I have stepped out in faith to obey a command He was giving me. I had no idea how things were going to end up; I had no guarantees of a positive outcome. But isn’t that the point of faith? Trusting God in all circumstances?
I can tell you in absolute truth that every adventure leads me outside of my comfort area. It stretches me and grows my faith because it was not what I can accomplish in my own human power. I have come to realize God is more concerned with growing my faith and me living my purpose than He is with me being comfortable. I believe the same applies to you.
Your adventures will look different than mine. But they are no less significant, no less an exciting journey. God created you differently than me or anyone else, because He has a purpose for you that is unique to only you.
My prayer is that you are willing to trade your fears, regrets and past defeats for an adventure with God. When you accept His invitation you will have great stories to tell. And I just love a great story.
